It is advisable that you prayerfully and meditatively read the text first

TEXT: Genesis 12:1-9 (KJV)

1 Now the Lord had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father’s house, unto a land that I will shew thee:

2 And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing:

3 And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.

4 So Abram departed, as the Lord had spoken unto him; and Lot went with him: and Abram was seventy and five years old when he departed out of Haran.

5 And Abram took Sarai his wife, and Lot his brother’s son, and all their substance that they had gathered, and the souls that they had gotten in Haran; and they went forth to go into the land of Canaan; and into the land of Canaan they came.

6 And Abram passed through the land unto the place of Sichem, unto the plain of Moreh. And the Canaanite was then in the land.

7 And the Lord appeared unto Abram, and said, Unto thy seed will I give this land: and there builded he an altar unto the Lord, who appeared unto him.

8 And he removed from thence unto a mountain on the east of Bethel, and pitched his tent, having Bethel on the west, and Hai on the east: and there he builded an altar unto the Lord, and called upon the name of the Lord.

9 And Abram journeyed, going on still toward the south.

DCLM DAILY MANNA 26th March 2022 DEVOTIONAL

MESSAGE:

Sir Leonard Wood was visiting the king of France. The king was pleased with him and invited him to dinner the next day. He went. But the king said, “Sir Leonard, I did not expect to see you. How is it that you are here?” “Did not your majesty invite me to dine with you?” “Yes, but you did not answer my invitation.” Leonard Wood ended the king’s interrogation by answering, “A king’s invitation is never to be answered, but to be obeyed.”

Two things stand out in Abraham’s life: his faith and obedience. The Lord called him out of the comfort zone of his people, and he obeyed and left. Abram took his wife, his nephew Lot and all his possessions and went towards the direction God led him. This was a practical demonstration of his belief and trust in God’s promises.

It is impossible for us to discover new territories if we are unwilling to leave our present shores. This is where many will have to borrow a leaf from Abraham. Some people have rejected the call unto salvation because they do not intend to quit their jobs or sources of income, which might be ungodly. Others await their worldly friends and family members to approve of their decisions before they comply.

The encouragement is for us to take a leap of faith and demonstrate true obedience. We also need to trust the Lord’s promise to liberate us. We should burn the bridge behind us so there will be no turning back to the world as we press on in obedience to God.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:
Obedience leads to fulfilment of God’s promises.

MEDITATION:

How to be the friend of God

Abraham was called “the friend of God”, James 2:23. What made God to condescend into a friendship relationship with Abraham? The text gave a clue.

1. Incomparable revelation
He received the revelation of God’s promises which include the following (vv2,3).

a. Generational blessing: “I will make thee a great nation.”

b. Great multidimensional blessings: “I will bless thee.”

c. Greatness: “I will make thy name great.”

d. Globally Influencial: “Thou shall be a blessing”

e. Guaranteed Security: “I will curse them that curse you”

f. Goodwill from society: “I will bless them that bless you.”

g. God vessel of producing the Messiah: “In you shall all the families of the earth be blessed”.

Observe that these promises are unmerited, just by grace, temporal and eternal, spiritual and material, etc.

No sinner is created to be a nonentity, moron or inconsequential in life. Every sinner that repents automatically becomes a partaker and sharer of Abraham’s blessing, Galatians 3:13,14.

Questions

a. Have you ever thought that you, being a child of Abraham in the Spirit, has a part in these blessings?

b. Do you know that every sinner that repents has these blessings pronounced on him/her as it was pronounced on Abraham unmerited?

2. Initial reluctance
a. Abraham, due to his limited knowledge of God, was initially reluctant.

b. Observe that when he left the land of nativity in Ur in answer to God’s call, he and his whole family decided to settle in Haran, an ancient civilised and prospered city at that time, for a long time, 11:31, 32. But that was not God’s will.

c. How long did they stay in Haran against the Lord’s command? Genesis 12:5 gave us a clue that they might have stayed there for quite some years. Wasted years in Haran! He did not come %back to his senses” until his father Terah died. Beware of relationships that delays your destiny

d. Since Abraham and Sarah might have married in Ur before getting to Haran, their marriage might have lasted far more than 25 years before giving birth to Isaac, 12:4.

Questions
He was not asked to go with his father and Lot but he did. Couldn’t this welfarism mentality have had some negative influence on him and caused the wasted years in Haran? Of what benefit was his father and Lot to the fulfilment of his destiny? Was it not better he obeyed God alone and ask Lot and his parents to join later after getting to Canaan? Paul said when he received the call of Jesus, he “conferred not with flesh and blood”.

3. Irreversible righteousness

a. Abraham only “recovered” after the death of his father. Some relationships actually block us from doing and enjoying the prefect will God, 11:31,32.

b. Abraham eventually decided to make up his mind to obey: “So Abraham departed”, v4. Have you made up your mind?

c. He made it a duty to pray to the point of hearing the voice of God at every city he entered during his sojourn, vv7,8. The only exception was when he slid back to Egypt in unbelief. At that time, heaven was blank!

Question
a. Abraham’s faith, even though without a Bible, mentor or example to follow, influenced his obedience to God. What are you doing to have a deeper revelation and knowledge of God?

All these blessing were fulfilled in Abraham (Genesis 24:1).

The mercy of God will overlook all your previous misteps if you fully make up your mind to follow God intimately to the end.
