TEXT: AMOS 8:1-10

KEY VERSE: “And he said, Amos, what seest thou? And I said, A basket of summer fruit. Then said the LORD unto me, The end is come upon my people of Israel; I will not again pass by them any more” (AMOS 8:2).

DCLM DAILY MANNA 5th April 2022 DEVOTIONAL

MESSAGE:

A critical review and analysis of the state of things in the world right now reveals that all is not well with humanity. We do not need to look too far to realize this. The signs are there for all to see. We have the global problem of insecurity right now. Religious and sectarian violence take place everywhere with many loosing their lives.

The Lord communicated through Amos His intention to wreck similar havoc in Israel, since they had already asked His prophets to leave and not prophesy in their cities. He equally condemned the oppression of the poor, the human trafficking and slavery that took place as the land sunk into anarchy. He promised to allow a famine to devastate the land and leave behind so many dead bodies that would be buried in silence. Their feasts will then be turned into mourning as a season of spiritual darkness sets in.

The world, like in the days of Amos, has turned her back on God and readily accepts sin with both hands. Children and youths are exposed to immorality and violence every day through the media and the internet. They benefit from the latest technology and developments in science, but do not understand their duties to God and humanity because the reading/study of His word is shut out of many schools.

We would rather have our 5-year olds taught about evolution and how marriage is no longer a union of a man and a woman. We are free to love anyone or anything, including animals and trees. All these would attract God’s wrath unless we repent.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Rejecting God has grave consequences.

MEDITATION:

Should man blame God?

When calamities happen, the first thing many uniformed religious do is to blame God and question, where is God? The sinners, atheists and gnostics ask the same question in a sarcastic way. However, history kept on repeating itself but yet man never learnt from history.

1. The Divine anger

a. There are 5 clear judgements prophesied against Israel in vv1-3 ranging from divine withdrawal, famine, mourning instead of joyful songs to massive and secret destruction of human lives.

Question
As you ponder on it, is there any that is not affecting your communities or neighbouring cities?

b. As if God was not done, He downloaded other judgements in vv7-10. Irreversible punishments, earth shaking calamities, destructive and drowning flood like River Nile, literal darkness and bitter mourning as a result of wanton loss of life and properties.

Question
Read vv7-10 carefully and think of how history is repeating itself in our modern world. Yet modern man never consider God factor in all these but only blame their governments and the rich or oligarchs

2. The deeds that provoked divine anger

God is always clear as to why His judgments.
Substle oppression of the poor and needy by the rich and those in power, economic and smart exploitation of the common man, turning the holy days of worship into business days, making merchandise of human souls, selling of fake and substandard products that are not fit for humans are some of the sins in vv4-6.

Question

a. What are the other sins mentioned in vv4-6?

b. Are you as a person part of “if you cannot beat then join them?”

3. The doers of the word

To avert, reduce or be freed from the judgement, there must be constant intercession for mercy, doing of the right yourself, refusal to join the sinners and proclamation of words of repentance to the guilty.

Prayer points:

Ask God to forgive if there is any area you are also guilty

Pray for grace to be doing the right by conduct and in proclamation against all evils

Ask God for mercy on your nation and deliver us and punish the evil doers

Pray that God will visit the land and awaken both rulers and the citizens to righteousness
